face=Arial>Having done the job on a Swing Axle bug and a Ghia, I can confirm and
agree with what Jim is saying. If you don't have to get in there, don't. I'd
change the trans oil, but if your seals aren't leaking, leave sleeping dogs
alone. In reality, that's reality the only time you need to be in there (if
they're leaking).</FONT></DIV>

face=Arial>I should mention that IF you decide to go in there anyway, you'll
need to make a bearing puller like Muir shows in his "How to keep your
Volkswagen alive"book. I say that, as the bearings are a "press fit"on the axle
shafts. You'll also have to fabricate an install tool as well (for the
