<p>this is Max from Munich Germany, I attended the New York reunion in 2014.</p>

<p>Referring to Mr. Jonik, it is a strange spark plug problem, indeed.</p>
<p>BUT, never use oil on a spark plug threat.</p>
<p>Oil burns in and you never get the spark plug out again, safe.</p>
<p>Old mechanics from VW here in Germany always told me that and they said, the only good thing to do in that case is to use first a little Silicon Spray and then Graphit Powder on the threats!!!<br>
</p>
<p>No more, because G.P. does not burn in and lubricates even after years.</p>
<p>I never had any problems so far.</p>

<p>Referring to Jims comment regarding oil cooling, yes, the oilpumps which have a oilfilter attached right to sticking out to the left right in the hot air outlet channel, well, I have one of theses pumps installed on my 78' convertible.</p>
<p>First, I have a filter!!!</p>
<p>Second, to prevent heating of the oil, I took a aluminium picknick plate, folded it twice and fastened it to the filter tightly so that the hot airstream goes now around the filter.</p>
<p>And it works very fine, no extra heating of the oil, measured!!!</p>

T III 73 engine; standard: ?? This never happened before.? Took out and touched up 1, 2, 3 spark plugs...wiped and put touch of oil on the threads.? Back they went, no problem.?

? Number 4 the same...put it back in...but then the VW spark-plug socket extension would not pull out. ? It wiggled, but it was jammed somehow. ? Had to use a long screwdriver against the insert twisting rod to pry it out...against the tin below.? I could not
pull it out by hand.<br>

I redid the procedure to see how it went.? Plug unscrewed, it and socket wrench thing came out.? I felt around in the hole area.? Nothing remarkable.? No damage evident on the plug.?? Put it back in and tightened it down...Again, the socket wrench would not
come out.? Had to do the screwdriver pry trick again.Started the car...no signs or sounds of problem in No. 4 plug area.? Unexplained problem solved in unknown way.<br>
What possible explanation?? There is a bolt and nut sticking up coming from the head into lower area of the plug access hole. ? It seems solid and tight.? Could any sort of metal movement in that area cause the spark plug wrench to jam when trying to pull it
out?? It tightened and un-tightened the plug alright. ? And, can't see any signs of scratching etc on the wrench metal.<br>

Sounds quite odd, but my guess is that this plug has been cross <br>
threaded into the head. That puts it at an angle such that it no <br>
longer points out the center of the hole in the tin. When that <br>
happens, the side of the wrench now catches on the tin.<br>
<br>
With care, you might be able to get it started straight again, but <br>
chances are that this head will need some sort of insert in that hole <br>
to make it right again. There are several options for that, but my <br>
preference is a HeliCoil. This CAN be done with the engine in the <br>
car, but the very best way to do it is with the bare head, so you can <br>
see what you're doing from both sides.<br>
<br>
Whatever you do, it's important that the repair be on the correct <br>
line. You don't want to discover that you've installed the insert at <br>
an angle. Again, this is easiest with the head off. The best way to <br>
do this is to have something long screwed into the good SP hole next <br>
door so you can make sure your insert tap is going in parallel to <br>
that good hole.<br>

Years ago, someone made and marketed a combination oil pump and <br>
filter base which extended straight left and held the filter in that <br>
hot airflow. Those units were an abismal failure, as they heated up <br>
the oil. Sounds like you're seeing a similar problem.<br>
<br>
As Keith and Daniel pointed out, you need to verify the calibration <br>
of your gauge at boiling water temp, keeping in mind your altitude <br>
and the effect that has on the boiling point. Then you should try to <br>
install your gauge in a better place. In my opinion, the very best <br>
place to install an oil temp gauge would be in the port on top of the <br>
oil cooler, such that the sensor stuck down INTO the body of the <br>
gauge, so that it sensed the temp of FLOWING oil on its way out of <br>
the cooler.<br>
