<div dir="ltr"><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:large">Just wanted to let y'all know that it wasn't the steering box after all. It's the brakes. I filled the reservoir up, and a few days later, it was back down to about half an inch or so. I need to get in there with a flashlight to see if there's a crack in the reservoir, or maybe in the rubber lines that connect it to the metal brake lines. It's been raining pretty hard, so as soon as I get a dry day with good light, I'm gonna look. Brakes seem to work OK with such a low fluid level in the reservoir. I'm alive and well, and still living in Frisco with The Baroness ('71 SB<br>
carbed automatic).<br>
<br>
About 5 years ago, I had to replace the steering box. Yesterday, I noticed<br>
a big wet stain on the cardboard I keep under the car on the garage floor.<br>
It was under the front, right between the wheels. I thought it was the<br>
brakes leaking, but I looked at them, and they're OK. So I'm thinking it's<br>
the steering box leaking.<br>

What can I do? Do I have to replace it again?<br>

The later Type 3 boxes should be grease filled, and while the oil component may separate with time, it's unlikely to make a 'big wet stain'.<br>
<br>
Screen washer fluid leaking?<br>
Fuel? (unlikely; you would smell it).<br>
Spare bottle of oil split or leaking?<br>
<br>
You will have to look for evidence of what is leaking. Was the steering box replaced with an oil-filled one maybe? <br>
<br>
Good to hear you and the Baroness are still together.<br>

Hi Lori, good to hear you're still around. First, I'd make sure it's not the <br>
steering dampener that's leaking. Then, you'd have to look at the steering <br>
box to find out where it's leaking from. Was it a new TRW box? Just asking <br>
as some of them have been troublesome lately. There's a guy on the Samba <br>
who goes into detail on rebuilding OE boxes, and might have have a couple of <br>
ideas for you to check on your steering box. It might be worth checking out <br>
that thread, and PM ing him about yours.<br>
