Seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do, but by '73 VW had eliminated the <br>
drain plug. If you have one, go ahead and use it, but that means that your <br>
sump plate is an earlier one, with the drain hole in it.<br>

That's fine. I may have done the same on my '73.<br>

I find it annoying to not have a drain plug, but VW thought too many people <br>
were not cleaning their strainers. I agree that most of the time there's very <br>
little junk on them.<br>
