The Squarebacks transmission was rebuilt again by an experienced local<br>
builder a couple years ago after the west coast builders job ground the<br>
input shafts bearing down to a nub.<br>

Worked fine and was very happy with it for the first few thousand miles but<br>
now it occasionally pops out of 4th under moderate acceleration.  This<br>
Tranny has the Bus 3rd and 4th gear in it<br>

For the Freeway flier as it did on the first build with no popping issues,<br>
but he did change out the 4th due to minor damage from the sloppy bearing.<br>

Now I know that the old swing trannies would pop out when they wore out but<br>
this is IRS, and nothing in there should be worn with less than 10Kmi on it,<br>

So what could it possibly be?  I have adjusted the linkage at the shifter<br>
(moved the plate forward to make sure its pushed in properly) to no avail,<br>
the rest of the linkage<br>
<br>
Is good although the guide bushing below the shifter is worn (as they<br>
usually are).<br>

One clue may be that if I make note to get it in firmly it hasn't popped<br>
out, and if its in for a mile, its in for 300miles, never pops out after the<br>
first mile, so<br>
<br>
What is SUPPOSED to hold it in gear?  Trannies are a black box for me so Im<br>
trying to get a feeling for what could be wrong by understanding how it<br>
should work in the first place.<br>
