Yes, I have ammeters on all my cars.  Yes, something at idle, but if your
running even the running lights alone they discharge at idle.  I really
don't notice much difference between the alternator cars and the generator
cars in everyday driving.

In that case, they should have been putting out something, even at 
idle. They may not have put out enough to cover all the loads while 
at idle, but they should have been putting out something.

Without an ammeter in the circuit, this is actually quite a hard 
thing to see.
