I didn't even have a cover and strap at the time I got the car (silly careless POs), and the height concerned me, so I've got a little custom thingamajigger for mine.  Here are some pictures:

OK, confession time: mine's in a Bug, not a Type 3.  The same sort of setup should work, though.
