Was there something about the gland nut too, when going that way? 

Take a look at Toby Erkson's description of fitting an alternator to a Type
3.

You would have to replace the AT drive plate with an MT flywheel and recheck
the end play. You might also want to swap the intake air distributors and
the aux air regulators. If the engine came from a different year, you might
also want to exchange other parts.

You can do this with any AT engine, but it would be best if it was a '70 or
later.

Alternator conversions are possible, but require more skills and more
modifications, and are usually not really necessary.
