It has been my experience that many glass installers have never dealt with an old VW. 

A little like taking your type-2 to Jiffy-Lube for an oil change.

When a windshield leaks there is no good quick fix.  The best method is to replace the seal.  If you are not adept at replacing glass (and most of us are not), I recommend removing the windshield by cutting the current seal using a utility knife, purchasing a new seal and call a local automotive glass installer to re-install the windshield.
