Hmmm, that's troubling, I don't hear any exaust popping from inside them,
but I suppose the leak could be really small.

One of the heat exchangers is broken inside, and when you turn the 
centrifugal force shifts it out of line and a puff of exhaust gets 
into the hot air chamber.

It is likely leaking a little all the time and is putting carbon 
monoxide into the car.  Be careful.
