That nut appears to be a forging with a "hub" on one side which has 
then been machined flat. The other side is "as forged." The flat side 
should go against the bearing thrust washer.

The bearing thrust washer may be slightly tapered in one direction, 
but it's machined flat on both sides, so it doesn't matter which side 
faces the bearing.
