Excuse  my ignorance on this topic, but do Type 3's in California have to
have this  equipment in place to pass their inspection?  Even though it

I don't think so, but parts of Arizona do require it, and anything else
back to 1960. :O There was a discussion of that over on the Samba in the
general  chat section some time back. I think current Cali law is for 76 and on.

It occurs to me that maybe  you have a broken motor mount somewhere.
If the drive train wasn't  completely restrained, a hard downshift
might cause it to jump around and  probably make some sort of noise.

Just a wild guess, but possibly worth  checking out....

Jim, Bill has CP (IIRC), and "isn't even supposed to drive a MT car". ;^)
He has been teaching himself how to drive one though, and just needs
practice to  get smooth. Bill, you might try using just 3 fingers to grab the
shifter (index,  middle and thumb), and just glide it into place, as it shouldn't
require much  more than that. On my own cars I know this is possible,
except for reverse which  requires the downward pressure to over come the spring.
Don't get yourself down  on this Bill, eventually you'll get it right, and
then it'll be more enjoyable.  Keep up the good work. : )

Rain  work etc.Job done turn over no start. MMm.. So go back ck parts
again,  reattach condenser, then i figure maybe my coil took a dump ( it was
blue) I  get a new/used black coil and my 10 yr old daughter installed that ( i
have  pictures too and prove my boyfreind double cked her)
Still no start. power  going into coil but not out so I called my friend,
and he came down to ck my  work. He came to same conclusion. Fine. No power
out. Wait he says WTF?? Who  messed with that screw?? I go to the back of the
car and he says DID YOU move  that screw?? The one he was speaking of was
the one that holds the vacum  advance to the dizzy.I did not touch it nor did
anyone else since I have owned  the car. (Owner #3) It is now BARELY
touching the points enough to make them  short. The NEW BOSH points I assume are
the right ones. Has anyone ever ran  into this?? Please let me know??
I guess I have what is called the 010  stock dizzy..Needless to say screw
was removed and ground down ever so  slightly and Lucy is running.. WHAT THE
HECK?? Peace and Love to all  Kelleigh

You're not the first to experience this, nor the last I'm sure. Most of the
time however, it seems that someone replaced the points screw with 1 that
was  longer, locking up the advance instead. I have seen where it's close to
touching  though. It's pretty cool that you got your daughter involved, as
most kids just  aren't interested in doing much but playing video games.
