[T3] Up date on 72 Fastback

(Oops sorry - mouse trouble stoped me cjecking what I'd written, now solved
I hope).

It should have said 'the centre piece is just trim'.

Once two lugs one side are bent up a bit, that will allow the bezel edge to
be popped off that side carefully then moved sideways. The other side
hardly needs disturbing, if at all. It's nice to protect those lugs as much
as possible. A thin pocket knife blade or feeler gauge blade helps to
spring the bezel off and refit.

You will then be able to clean up the aluminium inner face of the bezel. I
think the 'glass' comes out of the bezel - I know the speedo index does, as
that can be replaced back to front. If not easily done, it would need
masking up for cleaning and a light spray of aluminium paint.

There are 4 folded lugs holding the chrome bezel. You need only ease them a
bit - in fact only really on one side, then you can ease the bezel off
slightly sideways.

The centre piece is just tim. It's harder to do on the speedometer as you
domn't really want to disturb the needle.

I've had three Squarebacks here at one point, built on consecutive days,
which seems an amazing coincidence, though they would all have been RHD for
the UK importers so may well have been made in batches. On two of those at
least, the speedo dial plastic had a small half-moon shaped crack on the
edge. I don't know for sure about the third, as that was a scrap one I
bought and I didn't really look at the speedo - not sure if I would know
which it was now.

How much trouble would it be to
take the gauge apart and re-glue it back on? Or do I need to find another
gauge?

It's not that hard of a job, but you'll need to remove the chrome bezel in
order to get to that part of the gauge. You'll have to work carefully from
the backside of the lip to remove it. I use 2 small screw drivers, working
all around the perimeter.
