It's sometimes informative to look at the engine when it's dark and  
running
poorly to see if you're getting stray sparks anywhere.

I do this as a matter of course. It is quick and easy and for aging  
eyes, the spark/electrical leak stands out like a beacon. I've been  
surprised at the light show on occasion. Great for eliminating bad or  
failing wires.
