To whom it may concern

I am busy restoring a 1969 1600 TL Fastback. Can you please assist me with
the following rubbers:
1. Front windscreen rubber - must take the chrome beading
2. Rear window rubber - also suitable for the chrome beading
3. L-H & R-H rear window rubbers.
Thank you
Bernard

If there's a poor connection between the main battery connections - perhaps
due to corrosion, grease or something - it's possible that the resistance is
gradually increasing during operation. I had a situation where I had put
copper grease on starter terminals and after a few days the starter wouldn't
turn the engine over. Cleaning the connections back to metal and leaving
out the grease cured it permanently. I've also had misfires when using a
dab of copper grease on spark plug threads.

I rechecked the generator mounting, and found the alignment less than the
width of the dimple on the strap off. ( 1mm ) I'll correct that, however it
seems too small to create a heating issue. Yes Jim I have your charging fact
sheet and will recheck everything again. I will also repeat my drive from a
few days back without any load except the clock and the fuel pump and any
other draws necessary for the car to run. ( coil, fuel injectors, dist. etc
) The generator is a re- manufactured bosch # 311 903 031. I see on the
commutator (?), where the brushes ride, a ledge indicating wear. The groves
are still very visible and are deeper than the ledge is tall by many
factors. The brushes are protruding above the holder brackets and the spring
(s) seems plenty strong.
The voltage regulator is not bosch and I have some reservations regarding
that component. I'm not sure I can envision a situation where the V R would
drop as the temp. went up. Does anyone have any comments on the new style
bosch electronic V R ?
I'd like to get this solved as my transmission is debating itself as to what
gear it should be in and when.
Thanks Tim

Opinion and experience?

I'm a "newbie" here, but always learning from these discussions.

"What's the feeling about the original style vs. the Solid State VR?" Jim,
I believe you installed an original (mechanical?) style VR instead of the
Solid State VR in my '69 Variant. Dependable operation and longevity ...
which one seems to be favored? Or is the solid state VR "too new" to have
stood the test of time? Of the list members, are most of us still running
the original style?

Another (unrelated) question: Do any list/members live near Burwell,
Cambridgeshire, England CB25 0AH?

A couple people here have the new ones, but I've never dealt with
them. I need to try one. I'll bet they work just fine, but I'm
annoyed by the fact that the whole cover is electrically hot. This
means that letting a seat belt slip down there could lead to
something really exciting. I don't see why that would be necessary,
because done properly there should be no need for much of a heat
sink, which is what Bosch appears to be doing here.

I'm not sure what this might refer to, but it's possible that it's
talking about a rather old technique for cleaning up fouled spark
plugs. The method was to run up to the red line in each gear until
the engine started missing and to just slowly push the speed higher
as the miss slowly went away.

Do this up to the red line, then upshift and repeat. Eventually,
you'll get to a gear where the engine runs well but just won't go any
faster. In third, you should be able to hit the red line well before
you hit your car's top speed.

If you have a miss that just won't go away with this process, then
you have to start looking at other things.

IIRC, I first saw this mentioned in Road & Track many years ago,
referred to as an "Italian Tuneup." If you're Italian, I hope you'll
accept this as the humor in which it was intended.

What qualifies as 'near'? Nowhere in England is all that far - less than a
day's drive anyway.

If you are looking for Type 3 enthusiasts in the UK you would find more on
the VW club forum at www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk and I would guess someone is
within 10 or 20 miles.

What specific interest do you have for that address, Frito?

I have a new one and so far so good. I too am slightly worried about the
cover being hot but so far no problems. There is a piece of heavy paper
that seems to be original and folds over the VR and would possibly save you
from something coming in contact briefly. My son sits in the back all the
time and sometimes with his friend. So far the pressure from the seat
springs has not caused a problem.
