That's correct. There's a "self cleaning" temperature range where you 
want your plugs to operate. If they run cooler than that they 
accumulate carbon, etc; if they run hotter than that they will be 
damaged. Plugs are available in different "heat ranges" to allow 
automakers to choose a version that runs at the right temperature in 
their engine.  

It's the temperature of the insulator, the portion next to the spark 
gap, that we're concerned with here.
