That's a good idea - it will tend to go down through the rusted hole as
well, so get something to catch the mess in the car too!  I had something
similar around the area but the outlet wasn't affected, though the mounting
bracket was hanging free!

You will probably have to cut the top of the airbox out so you can get in
there and repair the tray.  If the top isn't rusted out, a thin cut will
allow it all to be tack welded back in place invisibly.  If it's also rusty,
there's more work to do.  In the UK we don't usually have the pvc material
lining on the airbox and inner wing, so any rust is all too visible!

A glued-on funnel is probably a pretty reasonable way to deal with that. You
should also figure out a way to clean out the tray above it, because it's
almost certainly full of crud that held water there and caused the rust.

I've used compressed air with a small tube that I could feed thru the
louvers and blow the stuff out. Wear goggles when you do this!
