Jim,

I'll be doing my pre-summer maintenance in a week. I've been using standard SAE30 because that is what the "book" calls for and that's what the original owner always used.

I plan to try some of the Rislone "4401" ZDDP oil treatment this time. If I understand how to use the stuff, the mix is 80% oil, 20% ZDDP additive, which would be 2 qts. oil and 16 0z. additive in a VW crankcase. Is that correct?

Also, would you recommend that I stick with SAE30 or try a multi-viscosity oil? If so, which grade, i.e., 10-40, 20-50, etc? As for brand, I have always used Castrol or Valvoline in my cars, and have hesitated to use Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple or the other specialty brands, as good as they may be, because I like to stick with something that is generally available at any chain auto parts store wherever I happen to be.

PS - I'm in SoCal, where it never gets cold and can get quite warm in the summer.
