It should not have required anything other than the 4 screws to hold 
it together. The cable tie was just there to hold it together until 
you could tighten the screws, which then hold the whole sandwich 
together. Did something break and allow the ball to get loose?

I think the problem was that you never complained after I fixed it 
and then years later you mentioned that you were hoping for a 
warrantee repair.

Yes, only 1000 miles should be insignificant. I suspect that you're 
right about the problem being that you had to pull back hard to get 
the hi/lo relay to switch. That excess force probably broke 
something, and the cause was probably some dirt or corrosion on the 
little brass spring contacts for the hi/lo relay. I've never seen any 
problems with those, so I probably didn't check them out. They played 
no part in the reason you sent it to me in the first place.
