An engine bay fire usually wouldn't require pulling the engine. You
might want to take a close look at what got destroyed before you go
that far. Most of the things that might need help or replacement are
accessible from the topside, so just look at the carbs, fuel pump,
wiring (really simple on your '62) and generator.

You're likely to need some replacement parts. I don't have anything
from that early, but someone here probably will, or you can check at
the Samba. If you're lucky, you may be able to just clean up things,
and you might just need some rebuild kits.

This was my thought too Jim, but it might be a case of not really being
able to access the front of the engine bay for him. He's not sure at this
point how much of the cars wiring got burned in the fire, but it could be that
the right side light wires got cooked, along with those on top. Of course
there's nothing that says you couldn't build a platform to lay on, that
extends into the engine bay (might be easier on the lower back too), to allow
one to reach the front wall. You know, something built out of short saw
horses with a 2ft wide plank on top. Just an idea.;^) Although with the engine
out, you could put a small office chair in there and work comfortably (BTDT
before). Just getting in and out is a pain though.
