Not much you can do, you can use the muffler paints but they rust back off
rather quickly, the hotcoat done by the professionals is better but that
rusts out eventually too. The best solution is galvanizing, and the very
last run of Mufflers Walker did in 1989 got galvanized, and that’s whats on
my 71 now. It’s the original muffler with this engine that I put on there
in 1991, been thru one salty winter and 125Kmi and its still in pretty good
shape but slowly the zinc layer is failing and IVe had to touch up a couple
spots with braze.

Spend the money to get the best OEM german you can or if your really lucky
find an end of production Walker and use that.

Subject: [T3] Muffler life...

I just replaced a muffler that looked like it was hit with a grenade.  It's
been patched here and there for the last year or so...but, in one day, it
fractured at many points. One pipe to the heaters was completely detached.

The replacement came from a parts car that's been sitting for years...rust
on the surface but no holes or signs of weakness...and it sounds just fine
installed.

Question is:  Is there any way to be nice to a muffler to extend its life?

Oiling it up doesn't sound like a good idea....it will burn off as soon as
it warms up.
