[T3] Muffler life...

 I just replaced a muffler that looked like it was hit with a grenade.  It's been patched here and there for the last year or so...but, in one day, it fractured at many points. One pipe to the heaters was completely detached.  

 The replacement came from a parts car that's been sitting for years...rust on the surface but no holes or signs of weakness...and it sounds just fine installed.

Question is:  Is there any way to be nice to a muffler to extend its life?   
Oiling it up doesn't sound like a good idea....it will burn off as soon as it warms up.
