This is especially true of the windshields in '71 and later cars. 
This can be a big enough headache that it ends up making the whole 
process unbearable.  

I would suggest you try to think of a way to patch the tear you have 
now. I've never done it, but there might be a way to do it somewhat 
neatly, like using the tape that carpet layers use.

If the tear is not near the windshield, how about removing the glass 
near the tear, and using carpet tape on the top side of the 
headliner. That might seem like a pain, but you probably don't 
realize how much pain a new headliner can be.
