I had envisioned 2 boxed sections, one on each side, but I gather 
that's wrong. There must have been just one box that went the full 
width of the subframe.

So there must not have been a drain hole before the boxed sections 
were added, and after the boxed sections were removed, the drain/vent 
was under the little covers I described earlier.
