Well its getting worse, now the glow remains even when warmed up and driving
along, it flickers a bit and that's when the voltage has come up and its
charging, the voltage is perhaps a bit too high at times

I felt it, it was about 40-50C, not too hot, the generator was cool.
Ive got 5 conventional regulators, Hopefully I can pick or make a good one..

The generator warms up at the same time. Thermal expansion in the 
field windings could change things, and also the winding resistance 
increases as they warm up.

So this could still be in the generator.
