Rotor and cap contacts are irrelevant, since, as Keith points out, 
the spark jumps an air gap there anyway. The air is a MUCH better 
insulator than any corrosion.

My vote would be for the ignition points. If they were set too close, 
they might not have been opening reliably.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fluttering." I'm not familiar with any 
symptom that I would describe with that word.
