Since grounding the coil negative will stop the engine, it sounds as if you
may have a faulty meter.

Subject: [T3] Dwell Meter Stalls Engine
OK. So I just put in a newly rebuilt distributor. After much fiddly around
I got it to a point where the car will start and stay running. The problem
is that when I hook up the dwell meter (red on -coil, black to ground) it
kills the engine. If I switch it to TACH mode it reads the RPM, but the
engine slows way down. As soon as I go to DWELL mode again it will stall.
What's going on?
