Sounds like you're describing the '68-9 version that doesn't have the 
spring and nut "adjuster" that ends up inside the door. That's the 
right version, but we need the longer arm in order to be correct for 
a LHD RH mirror. (Things got reversed in the UK.) When those broke, 
it was either the arm itself that broke or the connection to the 
mirror.

Starting in about '70, the part that screwed into the door got an 
"adjuster" (the nut and spring inside) and became short. The long arm 
was then permanently mounted to the mirror.

I have dozens of those parts, and they are almost all different. It's 
amazing how much variety there was over just a few years of 
production. Apparently they were made by several different 
manufacturers and each manufacturer may have changed their design 
several times. The tapers vary; the lengths of the tapers vary, the 
tapered "wedge" inside varies, the hex inside the "wedge" varies.

And that was just for OE VW parts. If you add in aftermarket 
versions, like Gary had, it gets even worse.
