Anything more than 1/4 inch is probably expecting too much. You could
wrap thin wire around, or even work a bit of wire loop into the hole to
strengthen the patch of paste.
You could even use "header wrap" to hold the paste in place. This is after
all a "temp fix", until you get back from the Invasion. After that, you
could weld in some patches for a "more permanent repair", or just replace it
totally. ;-)
