Jim,

I have come to the conclusion that the fuel sold today that contains
ethanol can case a significant quantity of water to accumulate in the bottom of
a gas tank. This seems to take several months of aging. Changing
temperatures might be contributing to the rapid separation of petroleum fuel and
ethanol fuel and water. The changing dew points seem to accelerate formation of
water droplets which then contaminates the tank. These are my personal
observations after two years of fuel system problems. I want my old fuel
without ethanol back. There is only one station about one hour away that sells
the unadulterated fuel.

Brion, I've been wondering about that as well, since my state has been
using 10% ethanol (in ALL grades of fuel) for over 20 years. Most of the
vehicles around here don't empty their tanks from the bottom like our VW's, so
the water (that's been separated) would just sit in the bottom of the tank
until the saturation level got too high. Then a couple of containers of "dry
gas" or premium fuel would be needed to help get it to burn. But since our
cars do drain (feed) from the bottom of the tank, any water would be the
first to be used (since it's heavier than gas), this would also have a
tendency to sit in the electric fuel pump when not in use (since it's located at
the lowest point of the car).

But yes, it did feel weird getting fuel from gas stations with just
straight gas (no ethanol) while we were out on the road. Gas was also cheaper the
further west we went, until we got to Colorado, when it came back to almost
what we pay here locally. :O I do know we did get better mileage out of
the straight fuel (like an extra 1 or 2 mpg).
