That plastic piece has a tab that should slip into a slot in the
stationary metal base. It's easy to slip the points together and not
get that tab inserted right, but getting that tab in there is
essential. It will never slip out once it's installed right.

I know you understand this, but this is a good lesson for everyone.
Sorry it turned your day sour.

And, certainly, thanks to John for coming to your rescue.

Yes, I did understand it. It's just that I had never seen that type of
"failure" before. I mean, yes it failed to stay in place, but after
re-positioning it, it worked fine for the 70 miles I drove home.

Yes, it was a very good lesson for me, and it's been filed into my brain
that "it can happen".
However, I don't really think I can call it a bad day. Yes, I didn't get
where I was trying to go, but instead, Sue and I got to hang with John and
Jill (we were going to do that at the show anyway). We did some talking and
discussing of the upcoming Invasion, John got to look at the different
things the early t-34's have, versus his later model, and got an up close look
at how Wolfie looks in person (versus the pics that had been posted). Plus I
got to check out his progress on the Sled. So it was a GOOD T-3 day. : )
Plus I got to learn something about points that I didn't know. ;-)

Yes, I'm very happy John came to my rescue, as did Sue. Thanks again John.
I mean we saw 4 police cars (2 state troopers, and 2 Detroit city police)
just drive right on by, and not even offer to call a tow truck or anything.
:O On top of that, someone else's car stopped almost exactly where we
originally did, but he couldn't move out of his lane, so he was partly blocking
traffic. I'd guess he was sitting in that spot for about a half hour,
before John came to our rescue. Before that, I watched 2 guys change a tire on
the I-75 ramp to I-94. It was really a bad spot for cars, and with
construction dropping 3 lanes to 1, really made traffic back up pretty good.
