If you still have access to the parts, I would make sure you have the 
'73 distributor and brain, too. The distributor is drastically 
different for '73 and the brain is slightly different. The '73 
versions are better.

The crankshaft end play may have caused problems with your 
compression, because it would have put side force on the pistons when 
you pushed the clutch pedal down. Or it may just be that other parts 
of that engine were also worn out.

Since this "new" '73 engine has been sitting around for quite a few 
years, put some time and warmup cycles on it, and then change the oil 
again. A lot of "stuff" is likely to come loose as you "bring it back 
to life."

All in all, it sounds like you've done a good thing here.
