The explanation given me by an old-time Porsche wrench was that the tooling for these rubber parts in post WWII was unavailable...so they used what they could get from the US/UK.  It stuck.
Another example of this was the 6v electric fuel pumps on the early 356 Carreras...made in the USA by Autopulse.
Domestic German production hadn't yet caught up.
