There are other things involved, the exhaust manifold gasket has leaked for
several years and it's the original clutch at 167K, so there are some swap
plusses.

And if I get something else and give it to the kid down the road, an engine
upgrade would be something he'd be on board for,

The clutch in my 88 golf was original from when I bought that car new. It
had 200k on it when I gave it to my oldest son.  6 months later we were
putting a clutch in it. He wants to put one of these new 20V turbos in it
not sure how easy of a swap that would be but if you were closer and he was
doing it soon I would give you dibs on this one. Only difference is it's a
100hp Digifant with the 8v 10 to 1 compression head. The thing had been a
very good engine still doesn't use oil and runs like a scalded dog.
