Besides the basics (sockets & wrench, screwdrivers, a few feet of fuel line, etc etc) I wouldn't leave home without...

-- spare parking and brake light bulbs, 

-- wire stripper and some male-female elec. connectors, 
-- a foot-powered air pump and tire pressure gauge,

-- tire puncture repair kit,
-- sm. container of bearing grease,
-- Allen wrench for bearing nuts,
-- vice grip pliers, sm. and standard,
-- a sm. can with nuts, screws, washers
-- and a small squeegee (the VW "defrost" system).
