Hello all! Happy New Year to everyone. I have a '73 Fastback that I am
currently restoring. Does anyone know what type of material was in the rear
window parcel shelf? I can't seem to find anything about this. Was it
originally carpeted, did it have hardboard on it or was it just covered in
vinyl?
Thanks Doug

I think it's a hardboard, covered in vinyl, with a type of horsehair under
it for sound deadening.

My had an odd like indoor-out door like salt and pepper carpet but different
than the rest of the carpet. I think I've told this before on here but the
reason I remember this so well we when I was a small child and it was a
fairly new car me and my brother would take turns sleeping up there on long
trips. It would leave an imprint on your cheek after you woke up. Nothing
like the humming of an air cooled VW engine to put a boy to sleep. Now we
just put regular black carpet that we got at ISP up there now. No one has
anything like the original as far as I know. But no I can't lay up there
to sleep now. I would do lucky to lay my fat head there LOL.
