[T3] Dash Pad

The '3' is the Type 3, but 1 is a Fastback or Notchback (Type 31), 4 is a
Type 3 Ghia (Type 34) and 6 is a Squareback (Type 36). The 9 is the year
model (1969).

The 0253093 is a serial number for the year production - it starts at 0 000
001 and goes up - yours is the 253,093rd one built since 1 August 1968 (the
'69 model year goes from 1 Aug '68 to 31 July '69). The extra '0' was added
as Beetle production was over a million a year. Production was a bit over
20,000 a month (over 1,000 a day!), and 12months x 20,000 is around the
number of your car.

I don't think you have a production date code on the front panel of your
'69, as it only started in August 60 for the 1970 model year.

Those who have one can look for a 3" x 1/2" plate (painted) on the end of
the front panel. This has a code like 12-3-4567. The 12 would indicate
week 12 of the calendar year, 3 is Wednesday (3rd day of the week), and 4567
is probably a line code with '4' signifying the production hall area
(usually 3 for Type 3s, but can be a 4) and the assembly line and position
(that's a 'best guess').

Later plates from 1971 model year (Aug '70) also had the factory paint code
across the end.

There's info on all this at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm (I think
that page gets a lot of hits from non-VW folk!).

I hope that helps!

I think I understand the "3" means Type 3; and the "69" is the year ...
but how do the numbers ... 0253093 ... indicate the car was "built late
June/July?"
Does 025 means the 25th week of 1969?
