The hole came plugged from the factory from at least '68-on,  perhaps 
'67, too. There was a chrome cap over the hole. You can see what  that 
cap looks like if you look at my orange '71, where it's still  there.
 
And on type 34's, when you ordered a radio (Blaupunkt), it came  with a 
location template to drill an elongated hole in the fender for a radio.  :O I 
used a photo copied template to locate the antenna on my own car after  
repairing the rust and filled in antenna holes (yes it had 2 of them filled  with 
brazing rod).
