I contacted the link http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm that Dave
H. included in his response about documenting a Birth Certificate for
my car.
The document (revised 20-Sep-2006) indicated that the cost of the
research service was about 20 Euros. (That was $26.75 USD in 2006.
Ah ... 7 years of inflation.)

In a response, Doerk, Wolfgang (EXTERN: VMUSE)
<extern.Wolfgang.Doerk at volkswagen.de> said the cost is now 50 Euros.
That's $66.87 USD.

For that cost providing the service Mr. Doerk said:

"We are pleased to research data of your Volkswagen and to draw up a
birth certificate with the recorded data regarding colour, date of
manufacture, port of destination, possible options and the kind of
engine."

"Do not forget to inform us about the chassis number of your vehicle
and the engine number. Because of data protection we are not allowed
to inform you about the original engine number. However, we are able
to proof if the engine number you will give us correspond to the
chassis number of your vehicle.
Please inform us about the name of the vehicles’ owner and the
complete address where we should send the certificate to, please.
We need approximately four weeks for the research.
New: You also can order a birth certificate directly about our
internet homepage www.volkswagen-automuseum.de. There you can find the
link “Zertifikats-Generator”.

So, IF it's important for you to have documentation about your Type 3,
it is available ... for a price.
When I get back to my stored car in Wisconsin and physically inspect
my tags, stampings, etc., I may order the Birth Certificate for my
Type 3.
