[T3] Brake Caliper etc.

71 FI Std....but with a 73 front axle beam and 73 brakes and the works.  It's the double valve caliper.

What exactly does the Piston Retainer Plate do?  Sure, name suggests it retains the piston, but where can the piston GO that it needs to be retained?
I've had cars which turned out to be missing a plate here and there...rarely with all in place...but what are effects of NOT having one?

As a temporary "fix" of some odd braking shakes at front right wheel, I pulled the brake pads and checked the disk.  One pad was thick enough but, along the side with the pin holes, the pad sloped up slightly...a shape I haven't seen.
The other pad, again nicely thick, sloped down noticeably...not drastically...from the pin hole side to the other.  Working on the street with rain on the way, I just switched the pads, left one stubborn Piston Retainer Plate out, and took it for a successful test spin. Braking now fine and shake-free.  As I said, temporary "fix".

I haven't measured thickness of the disk, but will soon change for reconditioned, thicker, one.
