I do have and LC1, I don't have an extra bung to weld into the muffler
though.  I can get one if I get desperate though...

Hi there Keith
If it runs well above 3K, then I would say the main circuit is good. The
idle circuit appears, from your descriptions, to be the culprit.  But, that
said, I am a Weber guy so I can speak only from this perspective.  The
physics should be similar.
Do you have an EGT?
This should help you dial these in.  Aircraft Spruce has a Falcon gauge for
about a "C" note, 400-900*F, I believe.
