With all this talk about #3 and #1 and small segment and large segment of
the drive, he hasn't been caught out by someone putting the drive dog the
other way round to clear the vac can, do you think? There are some out
there who advocate that (wrongly).

Good point Dave. I ran into that while rebuilding my T-34 engine, as I had
forgotten that the distributor I was using had the drive dog flipped, when
I set the distributor (and drive shaft) into the case (before the crank
went in). The reason for that was, I was using that very same distributor in a
bug case, and had flipped it, because the vac can wouldn't clear the type
3 generator or fuel pump like it was (the bug engine had been converted to
type 3 cooling). I had completely forgotten that I had done that some 13
years prior. :O In fact, when I resurrected that engine (for my 71
Square-Vert), and dropped a T-3 FI distributor in it, the plug wires were 180 out of
normal. Note; this is a carb engine, but I was looking for a good
distributor (points and condenser) that would allow the engine to start. I still
have yet to reset the distributor drive in the t-34, as my tool still hasn't
returned from Chicago. :O
