[T3] Chris's Mentor

I used to do mine on a steep slope - reversed to the top and worked from
under the engine overhang. No jack needed (I only had the monkey on a stick
back then, and it was an old Beetle so it was a lever it up, and drop in one
go type, not the lever down of the Type 3!).

I still use the feeler gauges I got for my 21st present from the lady who
cleaned our rooms in college (spoilt college brat!), but the 4 thou one is
missing the end from all the years of using that (tighter clearances back
then).

It doesn't take long to get up and turn the engine yourself, but I was more
nimble back then! Yes, turn the engine 1/2 turn backwards (CCW) each time
and do the valves for cyls 1-2-3-4. We all have our own versions - which
reminds me.....

IIRC, Jim uses his floor jack under (what I call) the "wishbone" where the
tubes come together in the center of the car and (almost) at the
front-to-back balance point of the car. That allows both of the rocker
covers to be removed, and apparently the position of the #1, 2, 3, and 4
valves to be viewed simultaneously to set the valves.

When he set my valve clearances, he was under the car, and asked my to
rotate the engine so the dizzy rotor turned clockwise(?) by 90°, starting
with the rotor pointing to #1.

Did I say that correctly, Jim?
