Maybe I'm getting them mixed up but I could of sworn that my oldest son's 88
Golf had paired washers on the inter CVs just like my Fastback and the 71
Std Beetle we are fixing up for my middle son.

That's very possible!  It's the only other area where there's much to
simplify. I don't think the early water-cooled cars had those paired
washers, and the inner joint on our Polo was the same Type 1/Type 3 joint.
Whatever, the blue locktite route sounds right for the calipers.

Sounds like you may be remembering the CV joint bolts and discontinued
washers.
