 The 1970 VW model production year ended in July 1970, and then they started
making the '71 models.  So you could buy a '71 model in 1970 which can lead
to a bit of confusion.  As Jim says, the third digit in the VIN number
confirms the model year, and as Bob says, the wiper parking and rear corner
vents is a quick visual sign to tell '70 from '71.
