Quote: " Then you factor in the fact that the type 4 engine was designed for
the heavier Type 2 and performance oriented 914."

That's not quite true. The engine was designed for the 411 car, intended
from the start to be 1700cc FI, but the first ones were twin carbed for 1969
model year. From 1972 Type 4 engines were also fitted to the Type 2 (Bus)
in the higher spec versions, which were the models typically supplied to the
USA. The VW-Porsche 914 was originally intended to replace the Volkswagen
Type 34 Karmann Ghia as a joint development project with Porsche, and used
the Type 4 engine for its extra performance. It was marketed as the Porsche
914 in the USA to avoid any confusion with VW.
