He may be thinking about the 6-bolt output shaft flanges for the CV 
joints.

I believe all the VMs will fit, but only the right one will work 
correctly. You can swap in one from a different AT, but it MUST be 
adjusted before the AT will work correctly. Instructions are in the 
Bentley. There is one VM for '68-71 FI Type 3s and one for '72-3 FI 
Type 3s. A third, for carbed Type 3s, is different. You must get the 
right one to mate to your AT and engine.  

I don't know about Type 2 or 4 VMs.

As long as you have Type 3 AT CV joint shafts, they will work. There 
were only 2 different Type 3 AT CV joint shafts, L & R. They are 
different from Type 3 MT shafts (which are the same, L & R.)

I don't know about Type 2 or 4 shafts.
