You replaced the pressure plate and did not rebalance the rotating
assembly. Sometimes you can get lucky doing this. Sometimes not.

Was there something wrong with the old PP? If you still have it, try reinstalling it.

 Hello to all,

 I have a 1966 type 3 fastback with twin carbs. Recently I
replaced the heads with new units. Once the motor was out I
also replaced the clutch plate, pressure plate, throw out
bearing. I have now noticed a motor vibration when the car
reaches 1200 to 1500 RPM when the car is stationary. The
vibration does not seem to appear while driving. My gut
feeling is a worn cooling fan bush running out of true when
revs are increased!? I am not experienced in this
cooling fan arrangement as I have only owned beetles and
kombis before I restored this fastback.

Can anyone suggest a probable cause of this vibration.
Should it be the fan are they easy to replace and does the
motor have to be taken out of the car to complete the
replacement? Any advice would be helpful.

Fully warmed up, at idle, NEW engine, about 12PSI oil pressure. Steady
state on the highway after a half hour at 85F, again, new engine, 38+PSI
depending on how the pressure relief spring is, this is with a dual relief
case, but probably the same as a single or similar. All with SAE30.

ZDDP additives or oils with them are an absolute MUST with these engines,
just ask any engine builder, they will void their warrantee if you fail to
 show them the receipts.

Sounds like your OK, although the OP will be a bit low if you or the align
borer didn't fit the bearings to the case properly and the oil pump isn't
fit properly either, most new pumps these days are junk, sloppy fits in the
 case.

Ok it was about 60 degrees here at noon today. Went and bumped the starter.
Was slow but would turn. Took a DVOM to the battery and it had about 12.2 V.
A little low so I hook our jump box to the battery and boom fired right up
just like nothing had happened. Let it idle for about 10 minutes then drove
it for another 10. Hook an oil pressure gage to it right after that and at
idle it would hold about 12-15 PSI somewhere around 2500 RPM (just a guess
no tach) about 50 PSI and quick revs would jump it up to nearly 75 PSI. The
Bentley says 28 PSI at 2500 RPMs with 30W oil so I think I'm OK on oil
pressure. I'm going to relook at my oil options (I know big can of worms to
open here). I may just try to find a zinc additive and go back with what I
used back in the day Castrol 10W40 in the winter and 20W50 in the summer.
We shall see. The best think thing I can do right now is avoid running it
when we have these artic fronts come through and just put some more miles on
it to further break it in. Some meteorologist are saying we could have
another cold blast like this last one the end of this month I guess we will
see. If we do Clementine will spend it in the shop.

 Hi Ross,
The clutch components, and very likely the flywheel too, have balancing
holes or dimples drilled. Where they exist (or there are paint marks) the
recommendation is that they are fitted opposite.

It's also possible to get vibrations due to imbalanced carbs. Once the
air-flow through the induction system is greater, this tends to disappear as
the balance hoses can cross-feed to some extent.

If it's a rattling noise rather than a vibration, check the cover plates and
muffler insulating plates are all firmly fixed.

A long screwdriver or rod held to the ear may help narrow down where the
 vibrations are coming from.

It was welded on the interior of the car, not between the inner and outer panels of the C-pillar, as you can see in this picture:
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1154298.jpg

I was worried a little at first, wondering if the thickness of the new plate would locate the hinge differently, but it seems to open and close just as it should. The buts were welded on the backside, and the plate then welded as shown. I presume they cut out enough of the inner C-pillar to make room for the nuts.

FYI, I sprung the sunroof addition request on them after the pop-out work was done. They did not have to get inside the C-pillar to do this pop-out work. I suppose I might have made it easier on them if I told him of the sunroof work earlier, and he could have directly welded a nut behind the inner C-pillar while it was cut open.

But this was an ingenious solution, which only required the headliner to be removed or at least peeled back; I was replacing the headliner anyway.

Okay, it's always good to hear from someone who has actually been

thru this. How did they get the nutplate inside the B pillar? With

the headliner gone, can it be slipped in from above? On a fasty could

it be slipped in from below, from the rear trunk?
