For many people there are only two kinds of aircooled VWs: bugs and busses.
I often get asked if my car is a Volvo. You just have to smile and tell them
what it really is.

As I was filling up the tank to leave the Invasion, the guy next to me,
driving some sort of big pickup, complemented me on my nice Type 3. That was
unusual, but it turned out that he had a bug and a KG, and was very familiar
with the full line of aircooled VWs. That's not the usual experience, but I
occasionally get people who stop and look at the car and tell me that they
used to have one of those.

I don't mind the folks who truly are not familiar with the air cooled VW
family I get a kick out of talking to them. Usually I get a lot of it's a
Karmann Ghia or Porsche. The Volvos you speak of are even less common down
here than a VW T-3 so I don't get a lot of that. I guess what I'm talking
about is people who I know that they know what it is and still call it a
bug. You see here in the south people tend to call things by a brand name.
Like all soft drinks are cokes all fork lifts are hysters so fourth and so
on so I guess that is where it comes from. I love the conversations I have
had so for since I have put her back on the road last fall. Much better than
it was in 89 when I quit driving her. Was just curious if type 3 owners run
in to this in other parts of the country and world. From what it looks like
so far my theory of it being a southern thing is holding true.
