adjusting screws I did not pay any attention to. But before I read this
reply, I nosed around in my garage some more and was surprised to find
another spare set of brake shoes. They were in a plain box I got from
Aircooled.net a long time ago (newspaper packing in the box is dated
2002). No manufacturer or part number noted anywhere. The lining on these
measured between 4 and 5 mm.

The other shoes that I could not get to fit measured about 7mm and came in
a box that said World Wide Friction(TM). No part number. But they did
have a sticker that said they came from Autohaus Arizona. I probably
ordered them sometime in the past 5 or 7 years, but forgot I had the other
set from Aircooled.net sitting on the shelf.

After switching the shoes out with the 5-mm thick linings the drums went
right back on. The brakes adjusted with about 7 or 8 clicks of the little
brass adjusting stars, which seemed about right to me.

So in the end I think those shoes with the ticker lining just did not fit
right. But next weekend I think I'll open things back up and have a closer
look at the slots in those adjusting screws.

Over the past few years I have been relying almost exclusively on public
transportation and tend to drive my Fastback very little -- usually only on
sunny Sundays. Few driven miles has made me a bit unpracticed in basic
maintenance, and I have to pull out the manuals for simple little jobs like
brakes. So I certainly appreciate the good tips from everybody. Overall
it was a good weekend for the Type 3. New brake shoes, changed brake
fluid, oil change, valve adjustments, checked timing and points, and
tweeked the idle speed (the only adjustment needed for the FI). My old
diesel Mercedes also finally got some attention.

Next on my list is a job I have been putting off for over 10 years: the
shift rod coupler!
